Nine glass windows smashed at Ely Cemetery causing over £17,000 of damage - councillors and staff 'absolutely devastated' at 'mindless act of vandalism'

Councillors and staff say they are "absolutely devastated" after nine windows of Ely Cemetery were smashed over the weekend, causing more than £17,000 worth of damage.
Sarah Jay, deputy clerk at City of Ely Council, said: “The Estates Team that manage the cemetery take great pride in their work and in maintaining the chapel and grounds to a high standard.
“Councillors and staff have been very shaken by this mindless act of vandalism – they’re absolutely devastated, and it could cost more than £20,000 to repair.”
The incident is believed to have happened between 4pm on July 7 and 7.30am this morning.
A police spokesman said: “Unfortunately we have received a report that over the weekend a large amount of damage has been caused at the Beech Lane Cemetery in Ely - mostly windows being smashed on the chapel.
