The future of Ely’s Christmas lights hangs in the balance due to its committee still waiting for electric connection sockets to be supplied and fitted.
While the City of Ely Council Christmas Lights Committee, which consists of councillors and community volunteers, has been able to buy new lights for the 2018 display they are waiting on Balfour Beatty to connect the sockets to lampposts.
The delay is because some lampposts had to be replaced within the last year.
“It is hoped that these will be ready to use this Christmas,” said chairman Councillor Alison Arnold.
“Erecting the Christmas lights and features starts at the end of October to the end of November and they are dismantled on or near the 12th night of Christmas. “Over those several weekends the group put in several hours, in sometimes appalling weather, for the residents and visitors of the parish of Ely.”
The committee’s report was read out at the City of Ely Council’s annual meeting on Monday April 9.
