A popular Ely cafe is set to play host to a new delicatessen.

Café Carrington’s, in The Cloisters, announced this week that it would transform the first floor of its premises into a delicatessen specialising in local produce – from cheeses to meats and preserves.

Tony Wuidart, of Carrington’s, has welcomed chef, Darrell Haylett and his wife Maud, who run a deli in Huntingdonshire, to help run the new business.

He said: “Their knowledge of food and relationship with local producers gives them a good platform for starting this new enterprise and to give the city its own traditional village shop Deli.

“They are passionate about promoting local produce and producers and realise that supporting them has a positive economic effect on the local community, so they support them by buying directly from them.

“This is why we will offer many products you cannot find in supermarkets that are unique to us and provided at sensible prices.”

The news comes just a week after businesswoman Tracy Allgood announced the launch of her delicatessen, called Allgoods of Ely, in the former Ely Morlands Antiques premises, in Market Place.
