FOUR new Canons were appointed by the Bishop of Ely, Dr Anthony Russell, and installed at Ely Cathedral at a special service on Sunday.
Honorary Canons for Ely Cathedral, Canon Brian Atling, priest in charge of Abbots Ripton, Houghton with Wyton, and King's Ripton, Canon Michael Goater, priest in charge of Great Shelford, and Canon Sue Wyatt, Vicar of Cherry Hinton St John the Evangelist, have been appointed Honorary Canons. Canon Hugh Shilson-Thomas, Dean of Selwyn College, was admitted as a Chapter Canon in the place of the Revd Brian Watchorn, who retired last year.
During the service each Canon was received by the Dean of Ely, Dr Michael Chandler, and given their own seat in the cathedral.
This year's honorary titles were awarded in recognition of the contribution each priest has made to the life and work of the church.
These priests are entitled to call themselves Canon but do not reside in the cathedral precincts. They will hold their titles for life.
