WICKEN pensioner Margaret Harding officially named Wicken Fen’s new passenger boat, Mayfly, at a ceremony held on Wednesday.
Margaret was asked to carry out the ceremony after suggesting the winning entry in a competition held earlier in the summer to find a name for the new 12-passenger electric-powered boat.
Her suggestion was based on a recollection of her childhood schooldays when her class built a raft and paddled it down to the annual Reach May Fair.
After toasting the new boat and pouring champagne over its bow, Margaret and fellow members of the Wicken Swallowtails Club enjoyed a cruise to the Five Miles from Anywhere No Hurry Inn at Upware for lunch.
Trips to discover the local fenland waterways depart Wicken Fen at 12.30 and 2pm on weekdays and 11.30am, 1, 2.15 and 3.30pm at weekends and school holidays until November 4. Ticket prices are �5 Adults �3 Children or �14 for a Family Ticket.
