FOR hundreds of teenagers across East Cambridgeshire the wait was finally over as they collected their A-level results on Thursday.

Students graduating from Ely College Sixth Form Centre were celebrating a 100 per cent pass rate, and in particular the 11 per cent who passed at A and A* grades, up from 6.6 per cent in 2011.

In total, 55 per cent of grades were at A*-C.

Of particular note in this Olympic year: 18 of the 22 students taking the college’s highly successful sports courses achieved A or B grades. One student, Claire Kerridge, leaves with a haul of four grade A passes and a B, including a Distinction for level 3 sport, A grades for psychology and history, and a B for general studies. Claire will leave Ely in September to study physical education at the University of East Anglia.

Mark Sirot-Smith, director at Ely College Sixth Form Centre, said: “We are delighted with the achievements of these young people. They have worked hard for their grades, over and above their contribution to the life of the college, and deserve every success in their chosen career or with their further study.

“As we bid farewell and good luck to this cohort, we look forward to welcoming our new students in a few weeks.”

According to high education admissions service UCAS, as of Thursday morning 357,915 applicants had been accepted into a university or college, compared with 384,649 on results day last year. This represents a fall of 6.95 per cent.

At the King’s School nearly a third third of all A-level results were A*s or As, and a total of 80 per cent were A*-C grades.

There were also many individual and class successes in the A2s. All students studying textiles, German, Spanish and Russian received A*s or As. Subjects where all students in the class scored A*s-Cs include business studies, government and politics, French, Chinese, photography, film studies, classical civilisation and religious studies.

Individual achievers, who all received at least three A*s and As, include Kate Martin, Aiden Martin, Robert West, Jack Yon, Flo Wynn, Lee Wei Wong, Eliot Koopowitz, Harlan Kohll, Oliver Hill and Hing Yum Cheng.

It was a double celebration for twins Kate and Aiden, who each received two As and an A* in their A Levels. Both twins have been offered a place at the University of East Anglia, which was their first choice for both. Kate also achieved 100% for both of the A2 Textiles units.

Head of King’s Ely, Sue Freestone said: “These results represent the fruits of years of hard work and commitment on the part of our students, and the support of their teachers and families. We are proud of all they have achieved.”
