A Neo Nazi rally in Haddenham shocked a group of friends so much they will be on a market stall in Ely this weekend to spread messages of tolerance and peace.
The Ely Community Against Hate group will be reassuring people that the city is a tolerant place that welcomes all nationalities.
The event ties in with a Cambridgeshire Police initiative which is running across the county this week that is encouraging people to report it to sort it in a bid to stamp out hate crime.
Joel Higgs, one of the organisers said: “Please, drop by and see us. Let’s spread some vibes of love and tolerance.”
He and friends were horrified by a BBC investigation that revealed about 350 supporters of a white supremacist group had gathered in Haddenham last month.
Police were told the event was a fund raiser for legitimate charity Help for Heroes - bu tit was later found to be by the group ‘Blood and Honour’.
Joel said: “Feeling shocked and appalled by the nature of the rally, we (a group of friends living locally to where the event took place), wanted to show that the kind of intolerance and bigotry of the Haddenham event, is not representative of our area.
“Ely markets have very kindly allowed us the use of one of their stalls as a meeting point and base.
“We want to get talking to people about the issues involved and generally spread a bit of positivity. We hope to have information and leaflets from various anti-hate organisations.
“It would be great if as many people as possible could join us on Saturday, to show that we oppose what took place and hopefully send a message of support out to some of the people effected by any form of right-wing hatred.”
The group has been given some ‘Ely community against hate’ stickers and badges from friends at Awesome Merchandise to give out to help deliver the message.
• Ely Community Against Hate will be in Ely market place on Saturday 15 from 10am to 4pm.
