A LITTLEPORT mum who needed dental treatment after being assaulted by her husband was awarded £100 compensation by a court this week.

Julie Bean will receive the cash from her husband of 13 years, Clive Bean, in payment for dental work she needed, and for the "indignity" she suffered.

Forty-three-year-old Bean had previously admitted assaulting his wife and two neighbours when drunk, during a row over the care of his six-year-old son.

Bean, of Upton Place, Littleport, was also ordered to pay £50 compensation to both Tony and Richard Newman.

He was given a nine-month supervision order, for the probation service to address his alcohol, anger, and relationship issues.

Prosecuting at Ely courthouse on Thursday, Olivia Gooding said Clive and Julie Bean's relationship had started to fall apart eight years ago, when he had an affair.

After Mrs Bean said she was planning to leave, her husband started to drink excessively.

On August 8, Bean had been to the pub, and came home drunk around 8pm, His wife did not want to leave their son in his care while she was at work, so the child was taken to the Newton's house. Bean was not happy about that, and went to collect the child.

"Mrs Bean received a call from her daughter, saying that the defendant had caused trouble at the Newman's house," said Ms Gooding.

Bean had argued with 18-year-old Richard Newman, and poked him in the chest. He pushed Tony Newman on the left shoulder, exacerbating an old injury.

"When Julie Bean arrived on the scene, Bean grabbed her by the throat, and pushed her against a wall," said Ms Gooding. He threw a punch at Tony Newman, which connected with his wife's face. She suffered a cut lip, and needed dental treatment.

Mitigating, Adam Haselhurst said Bean accepted that he had assaulted his wife, but denied grabbing her by the throat, or swinging a punch at her.

"He does accept he assaulted his wife," he said. "It is just the manner of it that is disputed. He does accept he poked one victim in the chest. He regrets being involved in this incident.
