LOW-PAID workers have been forced into 'moonlighting' or onto the dole queues by migrants who have taken their jobs, according to MP Malcolm Moss.

Mr Moss, who represents North East Cambridgeshire, which includes Littleport, fears that many women who worked part-time are now unemployed or working in the black economy. He spoke out about the growing issue of migrant workers in the Fens during a speech in the House of Commons.

"Local people cannot now get jobs in the factories in which historically they worked," he said. "Many may have been women who were part-time and are now sitting at home or working in the black economy - nobody benefits from that - or are unemployed so the income in a household has diminished."

He added migrant workers were welcome because they worked hard and have "terrific reputations". "But the mere fact that they are coming into our communities is creating a burden," he said, "particularly in relation to the provision of services.
