MALCOLM Moss, MP for North East Cambridgeshire, was guest adjudicator at the finals of the King's School Ely's debating competition on December 14.

Mr Moss praised the school and the religious studies teacher Francis Young, who organised the competition, for giving pupils the opportunity to practise debating skills which would prove invaluable whatever their career choices.

The annual event is keenly contested by teams representing King's Senior School's eight houses. There are three rounds leading up to two finals - one for younger pupils in Years 9 and 10 and another for older students.

The middle school final was won by Torfrida House who successfully proposed the motion that 'This house believes there is no solution to world poverty' and a team representing Hill House, who opposed the motion 'This house believes might is right in international politics', won the senior final.

Sixth former Jenny Wightwick chaired both debates and English teacher Mrs Charlotte Dean and head of French Miss Ruth Crabtree joined Mr Moss on the judging panel.
