MP Jim Paice called on the Government to support local food and described food labelling laws as a "shambles".
The MP for South East Cambridgeshire and farming spokesman for the Conservatives said all food should be labelled with its country of origin.
He told Agriculture Minister Joan Ruddock: "If you really want to promote local food, you must get a grip of our labelling rules and change them as soon as possible."
Ms Ruddock said she took the matter seriously and will do all she can to "enhance the regime".
