'Late' motorist gets ban for speeding

ELY magistrates have slammed a motorist caught driving at 106 mph along the A14 at Stow Cum Quy.

"This is an unacceptable speed. Our county has a tremendous number of accidents and speed is one contributory cause," said presiding magistrate Jane Lewin-Smith.

Stuart Kirby, 47, of Clophill, Bedfordshire, was banned from driving for 28 days, and fined £230 with £60 costs and a £15 surcharge.

He told the court he had been in a hurry on the day of the offence, because he was late returning his son to his mother.

Further adjournment

A DRUNKEN dad who used his car as a battering ram to smash up his family home as his terrified children cowered behind a sofa, had his sentencing further adjourned this week.

The probation service had been unable to prepare a report on 42-year-old Timothy Grooms, so Ely magistrates put the case back until February 19.

Grooms, of Thirwall Drive, Fordham, had previously admitted drink driving, causing damage to a front door, window and brickwork, and breaching a two-year conditional discharge.

Car seized

POLICE seized a car that was driven into the Littleport sports hall car park when it had no insurance cover, magistrates were told.

Learner driver Ahmed Beg, of Purley, Surrey, was convicted of driving a Fiat Punto without insurance and driving not in accordance with his licence.

He was fined a total of £375, six points were endorsed on his licence, and he must pay £35 costs and a £15 surcharge.

Phone driver fined

A WOMAN motorist caught using her mobile phone as she drove through traffic lights in Ely city centre has been fined £100.

Sandra Sheridan, 60, of Station Road, Willingham, also admitted that she drove without an MoT certificate and failed to produce her driving licence to police.

Sheridan was fined a total of £245 by Ely magistrates, her driving licence was endorsed with three points, and she must pay a £15 surcharge and £35 costs.

Burglary charge bail

A MAN who has denied attempting to burgle an Ely home had his trial adjourned this week.

Oliver Chapman, 25, of Fairstead Estate, King's Lynn, is accused of attempting to burgle the property in Broad Street on October 14 last year.

City magistrates gave him conditional bail until his trial on February 21.
