Stress led to smash

STRESSED out by fellow residents at an Ely hostel, Tony Caller smashed up his room, causing almost £200 worth of damage.

Police went to the hostel on Bank Holiday Monday to find extensive damage to walls, smashed crockery, and a damaged handle on a chest of drawers.

"He admitted the offence straight away," Ely magistrates heard from prosecutor Angela Sassoli on Thursday.

"He said other residents had stressed him out, and he would carry on behaving like that if other people continued to wind him up."

Thirty-year-old Caller told the court he was homeless, but had a postal address in Walsingham Way, Ely.

"I was feeling a bit stressed out," he explained. "I wish I had not done it, I regret doing it."

Caller was given a 16-month supervision order and told to pay £50 costs.

Harassment trial delay

THE trial of Robert Blair, who has denied harassing a woman in Ely, could not go ahead on Thursday, and has been rearranged for July 5.

Blair, 41, of St Neots Marina, is alleged to have harassed Katherine Westley between September 19 and November 1 last year, by following her on foot and in his vehicle, and by making verbal comments and hand gestures towards her.

Drug charge

HOMELESS Kenneth Docherty has been committed to stand trial at Cambridge Crown Court on drugs charges.

Docherty, 41, is alleged to have been concerned in the supply of heroin to an undercover police officer in Ely, and offered to supply buprenorphine to the officer on October 17.

Ely magistrates gave him conditional bail until June 8, when he is due to attend the Cambridge court for a preliminary hearing.

'Breached sentence'

LITTLE Downham man Paul Fuller is accused of breaching his six-month suspended jail sentence just days after it was imposed.

Fuller, 44, of Orchard Estate, was given the sentence last month, when he admitted getting a job in Wisbech by deception, by failing to declare previous convictions; and when he was re-sentenced for using an employer's fuel card to buy petrol for his own vehicle.

At the court hearing on April 19, Fuller was told he would be supervised by the probation service for 18 months and must take part in the Think First programme.

It is alleged that he missed appointments with probation on April 25 and 30.

Ely magistrates agreed that the case should be adjourned for two weeks while documents were obtained by Fuller. He was given unconditional bail.

Man denies assault

CLYDE Watson appeared in court on Thursday, and denied assaulting Jane Watson in Soham on April 24.

Watson, 45, of Adrian Way, Cambridge, was given conditional bail by Ely magistrates until June 7, when the date of his trial is due to be fixed. He is on conditional bail.
