Assaulted wife

SOHAM man Paul Green left his wife with a black eye and a swollen face after assaulting her four days before Christmas.

Green had been given an electronic tagging order by a court just two days earlier - and when he was thrown out of the couple's home the curfew equipment had to be removed.

When Green appeared at Ely courthouse on Thursday, the magistrates were asked to revoke the curfew order, which has not been operating since December 22.

"The difficulty with the curfew order was born out of the assault offence," said solicitor Adam Hazelhurst.

But, he added Green and his wife Francine were now reconciled to a certain degree, and he had returned to live at their address at Mill Corner, Soham.

After hearing that 30-year-old Green had a drink and drugs problem, the court adjourned sentencing until February 22 for a pre-sentence report.

Just in fine

UNEMPLOYED father-of-three David Taylor escaped a jail sentence this week, by stumping up more than £500 in outstanding fines.

Taylor was facing a seven-day sentence after failing to keep up his fine payments, but on Thursday he went to the bank and paid off a total of £570.

Taylor, 39, of New Barns Avenue, Ely, had owed £544 for offences including criminal damage to police property. He had previously been warned he would be jailed for seven days if he failed to pay £80 a month.

He still owes more than £1,600 to the court. Receiving news that Taylor had paid off some fines, presiding magistrate Janet South told him: "At least that has saved you a prison sentence."

Man faces trial

THE trial of Ely man Robin Deo will take place at the city courthouse on March 1. Deo, 37, of Barton Road, has denied assaulting Gita Deo in Ely on December 9 last year.

Burglary charge

A BURGLARY charge facing Barway man Ian Fenn has been adjourned for seven days. Fenn, 25, of Fenfields, is accused of burgling at property in Mereside at Soham on January 8, stealing a Sony Playstation, equipment and games worth £729.

Mum hid heroin

AN Ely mum who hid wraps of heroin in a suitcase has been given a three-month suspended jail sentence.

The drugs were found at Lucy Waters’ New Barns Avenue home when police carried out a drugs search last December.

Six wraps of the drug weighed a total of 464 mgs, and had a street value of around £40, Ely magistrates were told on Thursday.

Waters, 30, had admitted previously admitted possessing the drug. She refused to comment during a police interview, but later produced a statement saying the heroin was for her personal use.

She also admitted breaching her community order by missing two appointments with the probation service, and failing to attend court on January 4.

“She has had a dependency on heroin for a number of years, and has led a somewhat chaotic lifestyle,” said solicitor Adam Hazelhurst. Waters missed one probation appointment because she was asleep.

Now on a prescription for the heroin substitute methadone, Waters is motivated to change her life, he said. She has been free from heroin for three weeks.

Accused of theft

ELY man Anthony Silk has been committed to stand trial at Cambridge Crown Court, accused of stealing more than £2,700. It is alleged that 56-year-old Silk, of Windmill Close, stole amounts between £80 and £699 from Peter Morgan on various dates between November, 2005 and July, 2006.

Silk is due to appear at the Cambridge court for a preliminary hearing on March 2.
