Six-week jail term for DVD player thief

A SIX-WEEK prison sentence was imposed on Littleport man Alex Hughes this week, after he admitted stealing a DVD player.

But because he had already spent six weeks remanded in custody, the sentence has already been served.

Hughes, 23, of Fishers Bank, Littleport, stole the £139.97 DVD player from Tesco in Ely on March 14, Ely magistrates were told on Thursday.

Hughes, who is currently remanded in custody by Cambridge Crown Court, also admitted he was in breach of a conditional discharge for the theft of a jacket.

Solicitor Michael Judkins said the theft of the DVD player was not a drug-related offence, Hughes has stopped taking heroin and has a prescription for the heroin substitute, methadone.

Hughes had also admitted driving without insurance, a licence or an MoT certificate on January 16. He was fined a total of £100 and had eight points endorsed on his licence.

Carry out work or face prison term

AN Ely man has been warned he faces prison if he fails to carry out his community service work.

Daniel Coyle, of Abbots Way, Ely, was given a 100-hour work order back in February, for assaulting a police officer.

Appearing before Fenland magistrates on Thursday, Coyle admitted he had missed work on March 22 and 29, and April 22.

An extra seven hours were added to his work order after magistrates were told there had been some communications errors between Coyle and the probation service, and he had worked 17.5 hours so far.

Thief detained

for three weeks

THIEF Philip Catling was fined £100 for stealing two dozen cans of lager - but because he had been in custody for three weeks he does not have to pay.

Ely magistrates decided his 21-days on remand should be taken as payment for the fine.

Catling, 20, of Saffron Close, Littleport, admitted stealing the £44.40 worth of lager from Forbuoys in Littleport on March 3.

He also asked the court to take two more shoplifting offences into consideration.

Intimidation charges dropped

TWO charges of witness intimidation facing Ely man John Alps have been discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Alps, 51, of St Mary's Street, had been accused of committing the offences on January 10 and 11, by making contact with a witness by mobile phone.
