THE Met Office is advising caution to residents of East Cambs as flurries of snow and sleet are set to blanket the district today.

Ely Standard:

About 2cm of snow fell overnight into Monday morning, though there was little disruption to roads and services and all schools except Highfield School, in Ely, remained open as usual.

Up to 5cm of snow is expected to fall today however, with the potential for disruption to roads and travel across the district in the evening rush hour.

A spokesman said: “An area of sleet and snow will move eastwards across England during the early part of Monday, probably becoming light and patchy during the morning as it slows down over southeast England.

“Accumulations of snow from the first band will be variable, but 2 cm is possible in many areas, with locally 5cm from the Midlands northwards. The second band will be predominantly rain or sleet in the south Midlands and southern England, with snow more likely in northern and eastern England, where a further 2-5 cm of snow is possible in places.”

The spokesman added that the potential for further snowfall across eastern England into Monday night could lead to an amber warning being issued, the second most severe warning.
