A POLICE helicopter chased two men across fields in the early hours of the morning after they decamped from a vehicle dumped at Sutton.

A police car had earlier tried to stop the men travelling in an Audi A3 that appeared to be full of large plastic containers full of liquid.

"Officers used blue lights and a two-tone horn in an attempt to stop the car, but it failed to respond," prosecutor Olivia Gooding told Ely magistrates.

"The car was driven into a field, the two occupants decamped, and the car came to rest. Both men ran across fields, and the police helicopter was called."

Teenager Pender Smith had got out of the driver's door of the car, she said. When arrested he admitted having seen the police vehicle.

Standing in the dock at Ely courthouse, 19-year-old Smith, of Kent Road, Huntingdon, admitted failing to stop for the police in Bury Lane, Sutton, driving not in accordance with his provision al licence, and driving without insurance or an MoT certificate on October 17.

"He had a moment of misjudgement and a moment of panic," said solicitor Nen Spasojevic. "Moments before the police arrived, the Audi was being driven by its owner, who had given my client a lift.

"While they were driving, the owner asked my client if he wanted to drive. Not surprisingly, he succumbed to temptation.

"There was also a moment of panic. It was a pedestrian procession, there were no other vehicles around, and it was the early hours of the morning."

Fining Smith a total of £165, presiding magistrate Dr Christine Shaw told him: "This is not a good start to your driving career." Smith had six points endorsed on his driving licence and was ordered to pay £95 costs and a £15 surcharge.
