LEADING Ely butcher, Lawrence Rayment, has become a TV personality after being awarded five stars for service, quality and value for money.

Lawrence, who runs W Rayment and Son butchers in Market Street, which was established by his grandfather in 1920, has been named as Local Hero 2006 by satellite television company, UKTV.

He was nominated by a customer and now has his business listed on UKTV's food website along with other award-winning businesses throughout the UK.

"The award was a complete surprise," said Lawrence.

"Someone thinks a lot of me."

Lawrence believes his success comes from buying the products for his shop from highly regarded Norfolk farms.

He added: "I know how the animals are fed and cared for. It's good free range meat and you can't go wrong with that."

Customers travel from as far afield as London and Norfolk to buy meat, pies, pasties and quality jams and preserves from the shop.
