Flinging eels can be hungry work – so what better place to satisfy your cravings than at the Ely Food & Drink Festival, which is to come to the city on Sunday April 30 and Monday May 1.
The festival will round up the Eel Festival, which begins on Friday April 28, with over 60 artisan and specialist food and drink traders showcasing their wares under the gaze of the Ely Cathedral.
A range of culinary delights – ranging from the traditional to the unusual - will be on offer at the Street Food Place, while the festival’s beer and cocktail tent will be sure to quench even the driest of thirsts.
But the festival’s main attraction is its Cookery Theatre, which is to welcome two experts from the world of food.
Internationally renowned chef, Theo Randall and MasterChef champion Jane Devonshire will be demonstrating a variety of their favourite dishes alongside a host of local chefs.
Theo was launched into the culinary limelight after earning a Michelin Star at London’s The River Café. He then opened his own restaurant in 2006 before pioneering a casual dining concept, Theo’s Simple Italian in Kensington, and opening his first Asian venture, Theo Mio, at Intercontinental Bangkok in 2015.
He even found the time to write his first book, Pasta, in 2010, and has made appearances on a host of popular food-related programmes – Saturday Kitchen, Beat the Chef and Sunday Brunch to name a few.
Theo will be at the festival on Monday May 1.
On the Sunday, the festival welcomes Jane Devonshire, who was crowned MasterChef champion in 2016.
The stay-at-home mum triumphed in an extraordinary final cook-off where she wowed judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with her childhood-inspired menu made up of a Winkle starter, Indian-inspired Sunday Roast Lamb and Rhubarb and Custard dessert.
The chance to meet, greet and quiz the celebrity chefs is also on offer thanks to the festival’s ‘Audience With’ sessions at Cromwell House.
New to the festival for 2017 is the Kitchen Pantry on St Mary’s Green, which will offer a selection of goodies to help stock the pantry alongside some handy gadgets and kitchenware.
