A NINJA master came to visit the new Ely dojo.
Sensei Adam Richardson, the only British Fuma Ryu Ninjutsu Society master in Europe, came with his No 2 senior instructor Kyuoshi Paul Adams to share his expert knowledge and skills.
Dojo Cho Rick Pridmore, who set up the Ely dojo on Barton Road about two months ago, said: "It was such an honour for us to be visited by sensei Richardson. He has studied the art of ninja for years in Japan and America. He's become a fantastic personal mentor for me and he is so full of knowledge and passion."
The dojo was set like a scene from 15th century Feudal Japan. Lights were dimmed, shrines were displayed underneath clan banners and smoke from incense sticks wisped into the air.
Sensei Richardson passed on his knowledge and skills and Kyuoshi Adams expertly demonstrated a kata, or series of movements, with the school's primary weapon, the Naginata, a sword-like instrument.
The class trained in near total darkness and the evening ended with them displaying basic sword skills under the guidance of the instructors.
Mr Pridmore said: "We make darkness our ally in combat. Nine out of 10 attacks happen at night time and our class is trained to be able to deal with that situation.
"When you ask most people about ninja they think of Hollywood, with people jumping around in black suits making lots of noise. Ninja is not a sport or a hobby it is a way of life. We don't train to win medals or competitions but for survival, destruction and spiritual well-being. Everything we do is true and authentic to Japanese culture."
- The BFNS dojos often get involved in events and demonstrations at schools and colleges and are happy to teach people more about what they do. Anyone is welcome to join the Ely dojo for training on Thursdays, 8.40-10.30pm.
