MEMBERS of the Littleport Salvation Army set the tone for Christmas by playing carols for shoppers in Ely's Market Square over the last few weeks.
On the first and second weekend of Advent, the brass band serenaded market-goers with well-known tunes, raising more than £500 for 50 local families affected by mental health.
Salvation Army Major John Boyd said: "The money will go towards buying food to make up into Christmas parcels. Some of our members are quite elderly but it's something that we all enjoy doing."
Major Boyd added that any remaining cash would go towards grants given out to those in difficulty, throughout the new year.
