A ROMAN soldier dropped in at Ely Museum during the Easter holidays to give visitors a glimpse of what life in the Roman army was really like.

Marinus, a historical re-enactor, talked to children and adults about the gruelling life of a legionary on Tuesday and Thursday last week, and showed them some of the costumes and objects a soldier would have used.

The museum also staged a children's activity workshop at which children tried their hands at being Roman artisans with the help of artist Stuart Green.

"It went really well," said Sally Austin, education officer at the museum.

"The children had a chance to make their own paper mosaics to take home and they could contribute to a larger panel that will be on display at the museum - they worked very hard at it."

Rainbow Guides will add the finishing touches to the mosaic over the coming weeks.
