A MAN who horrified shoppers when he had a slanging match with his girlfriend in an Ely supermarket has been jailed for nine weeks on Thursday, when magistrates activated his suspended sentence.

Carl Scarrow and Donna Bush used foul language during the row in the Waitrose store, and pushed each other as they left via the glass lobby, city magistrates were told.

"Customers were alarmed by their behaviour, and the manager had to intervene," prosecutor Laura Mardell explained at Ely courthouse.

The couple had begun to argue in the alcohol section of the supermarket around 9.15 am on June 11, said Miss Mardell.

They were abusive to each other, shocking customers and alarming staff.

In the lobby, Scarrow pinned Bush against the wall, and Bush twice pushed Scarrow into a window.

"They were in each other's faces, shouting," added Miss Mardell.

Scarrow, of Cottier Drive, admitted using disorderly behaviour on June 11 and stealing four cans of alcohol from the Co-op in Soham on June 24, just six days after he was given an eight-week suspended sentence for two other offences of stealing alcohol.

"Alcohol is at the root of his offending," said Jacqui Baldwin, mitigating, "that needs to be addressed."

Donna Bush, 33, of Newport Avenue, Fordham, admitted using disorderly behaviour during the incident at Waitrose. Her case was adjourned for seven days.
