A MOTORIST had to be cut free from his car following a two-vehicle smash in Stretham.

The incident took place shortly after 12.45pm on Thursday on the A1123 Newmarket Road, with a black Volvo car forced into a field following a collision with a blue Ford Fusion.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said an elderly gentleman was trapped in his car following the collision and had to be cut free by fire-fighters. Police described his injuries as minor.

The driver of the Ford had already climbed free of the vehicle when ambulance crews arrived and suffered only cuts and bruising.

The A1123 has been closed in both directions while recovery takes place, causing delays for motorists. Officers are advising motorists to take alternative routes, with the road expected to be closed until 3pm.
