A man from Cambridge has admitted smothering his wife to death in November last year in a "tragic case where two children lost their mother".
Muhammad Malik, 36, who pleased guilty to manslaughter, contacted police on November 22 saying he had attacked his wife.
Police and paramedics attended the property in Perne Road and the woman was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, but sadly the mother of two young children died of her injuries.
Malik, of Perne Road, was arrested at the scene.
A post mortem concluded that the victim Asia Tufail, 32, died of asphyxia at the hands of a third party.
Today (April 7) at Cambridge Crown Court Malik pleaded guilty to manslaughter, on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He will be sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on May 19.
Detective Inspector Lucy Thomson said: “This was a tragic case where two young children lost their mother.
“Our thoughts go out to all of Asia’s family at this time.
“Although what has happened in court today will not bring her back, I hope that it will provide some closure for them as they start the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.”
