THE 34th annual Sutton Village Show was held in the Brooklands Centre Village Hall on Saturday.

It was affected by the unusually hot weather in that flower vegetable and home baking entries were down on last year's show.

The show had a magnificent response from the children of the village, with entries from Sutton Primary School and both the Paintbox and Butterfly pre-school groups.

The Hughes Cup for the best overall entry was awarded to the Butterflies for their collection of 20 decorated bird boxes.

In what he says is his final year, Dick Peacock again stole the show by carrying away seven awards for his flowers and vegetables, winning the Harold Painter Cup for most points in show, the Leslie Read Cup for most vegetable points, the Ernie's Tray Shield for a collection of vegetables and the Brian Painter Cup for most flower points.

In addition, he won the Peter Smith Memorial Cup for best vegetable exhibit and the Jimmy Mead's Memorial Cup for best horticultural exhibit in show.

Ann Plumb won the Peter Standon Cup for the most home-made produce points and the Oliver Cup for best sponge cake was won by Janet Townsin.

A new award, the Robinson Gimbert Cup for best gentlemen's cake, was won by Ian McCallum.

The WJ Robinson Cup for the most handicraft points was won by Neroli Sharp for her art collection. The Harrington Salver, awarded in memory of Ron Harrington, for the best overall exhibit in show, chosen and presented by his wife Edna and family, was won by Mr D Roberts for his carnivorous plant.

The DJs Top Vase, sponsored by DJs Garden Centre in Chatteris, was won by Dick Peacock, with John Groves second.

Show secretary Ian McCallum said: "Our thanks go out to all entrants and those who supported us by coming along in the afternoon and bidding very generously in the auction.

"Our thanks also to those who donated raffle prizes and items for the bottle stall, and to those entrants who donated their prize money back to show funds.
