SOHAM'S winter of discontent showed no signs of letting up as bad weather and bad football saw them lose out 3-0 to Woodford United.

Three break-away goals from Woodford frontman Jason Ramsay did for the Greens as they slipped to their fifth defeat in six games.

As in many of their recent losses, Soham made all the early running and were quickly into full flow. Their accomplished pass-and-move football was much in evidence in the early stages as Stuart Ablett proved an effective outlet on the right.

It was Ablett who had Soham's best chance in the opening 15 minutes as he was narrowly pipped to a cross-field pass by visiting 'keeper Matt Finlay who dispatched the ball into the stands.

For all their possession though, Soham were one again sucker-punched as, with twenty minutes on the clock, Ramsay poked home a rebounded shot that reared up out of the arms of Lea Jordan in the home goal.

That was as much as was seen from the visitors in the first-half as a visibly frustrated Soham side set about trying to get back on terms and, but for want of luck, they could easily have equalised before the half was up.

Paul Jones' rasping effort from the edge of the box was narrowly denied by the outstretched hand of the Woodford keeper on 25 minutes and this was soon followed by what would have been a shoe-in for goal of the season from Jones again as his effort from a full 25 yards clattered off the bar.

To complete the exasperation for the home faithful the woodwork reared its ugly head again as Martin McNeil's glancing effort spun away off the far-post just shy of the whistle.

For much of the opening half Woodford's number 10 Ramsay had been the visitors most effective and most used outlet. Heskey-like in stature and ability, Ramsay was a constant threat on the break and so it proved in three damaging minutes of the second-half as he completed his brace and hattrick in quick succession to all but finish the contest after 70 minutes for a luckless Soham.

Despite ploughing ahead gallantly in search of some way back into the game, Soham were unable to find the net again the second-half and each time they looked on top Woodford broke away to peg them back with an impeccable display of counter-attacking football.

The loss sees Soham slip to 16th place in the BGB Midlands League with teams above them having played a number of games less.
