A WORLD War I bayonet, an Ely City football programme from 1955 and an antique accordion from Germany were among the more curious lots of offer at an auction in Ely at the weekend.

The auction took place at Rowley Fine Art, in Downham Road, Ely and saw more than 500 lots go under the hammer.

The auction room was packed full of eager collectors, who shelled out hundreds of pounds over the afternoon.

The bayonet was eventually sold for £20 while the accordion was sold for £25. There was no taker for the Ely City programme however, which remained unsold.

An encyclopaedia of rural sports by DP Blaine first published in 1875 couldn’t attract a bidder and an odd mahogany bidet from the 19th century also remained unsold.

A brass hunting horn caused a real hoot among auction goers, selling for £55.

One of the more historic lots was a set of stained glass panes – thought to date to the 15th century – which featured images of crowns. They sold for a princely £220.

Star lot on the afternoon was a silver dressing table set which fetched £450, while a Chinese bottle vase made £390.

A number of marble and games collectors attended on the day and they sparked a bidding war that eventually saw a solitaire board with glass marbles sell for £290.

A spokesman for Rowley said: “It was a pretty lively auction and there was a good crowd in to have a look at some excellent lots. Our next auction is on Saturday, July 13, and we are still taking submissions now.”
