THERE was rush hour grid lock in Ely on Tuesday morning after a van became wedged under a railway bridge.

Queues of cars were backed up in all directions from the Angel Drove on the outskirts of the city after a Mercedes van became wedged under the bridge by Ely railway station on Station Road.

Police were called to the incident at about 7am but had to call in specialist assistance after struggling to free the stricken vehicle.

Efforts to deflate the tyres and drag the van from the scene proved fruitless and the fire brigade was subsequently called at 10am to help with efforts to remove the vehicle.

Crews bored holes into the roof of the van to relive the pressure of the bridge bearing down on the vehicle and eventually managed to drag it clear at about 11.30am.
