Emmaus Cambridge, based in Landbeach, will send a 40ft shipping container with 250 boxes of household items worth around £10,000 to the Romanian Emmaus community based in Satu Mare today, Wednesday November 15.
Romanian companions (formerly homeless) were invited to work at the Cambridge community for a month to help choose the contents of the container.
Emmaus Cambridge sent its first container to Romania in 2014 and has continued to make regular donations (bi-annually) to its sister community ever since.
Companions living at Emmaus Cambridge are encouraged to go and visit Satu Mare as part of an exchange programme to see how things are done in Europe.
Typically, companions living at the Satu Mare community are under 25 years-old and encouraged to stay in education. As residents of the community, they have access to health care and support in finding permanent housing.
Sorin Onica, community lead at Satu Mare, Romania, said: “On behalf of the Satu Mare community, I would like to thank Emmaus Cambridge for this act of solidarity, which helps our community.
“The impact of this gesture will help sustain our community’s needs for a whole month and would not be made possible without the companion’s involvement and help, to whom we would like to give our special thanks.”
