The idea was birthed from a message on social media by centre trustee, Clair-Marie Mackness, who said she has been “overwhelmed” by the response from the community.

“It was just a small idea that I thought might bring the community together in a positive way – never did I think we would get 1,000 poppies come to us.

“I called it the joining of hands because that is what the veterans had to do.

“The project has been open to people of all ages with the youngest contributor being just nine months old. All schools in Littleport have taken part.

“It has been overwhelming.”

Since mid-October the poppies have been coming in steadily to the Adams Heritage Centre everyday.

They are currently on display there but a special poppy exhibition will be held on November 25 from 10am, where residents will be able to see their handicrafts in full glory.
