ALMOST a tonne of rubbish, including a trampoline, a microwave oven complete with box and a motor was uncovered in the countryside around Ely at the weekend.
Litter pickers turned out in force to clean up Ely Common, Roswell Pits and the river banks and found more than they expected.
Along with the usual cans and bottles, they discovered a whole host of unusual items including a can of creosote and an armchair.
More than 60 people joined the spring clean up organised by Ely Wildspace and were treated to tea on the lawn at Ely Sailing Club for their efforts.
The litter pickers got through eight dozen scones and two dozen chocolate crispie cakes for the children after the event on Saturday afternoon.
Liz Hunter, vice chairman of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Ely, said: "The litter pick was organised so that this well loved and much used area of Ely could be kept litter free."
The event was supported by a number of Ely businesses including Tesco, Boots, the Pound Shop, Superdrug, Travis Perkins and G&J Peck.
