GERMAN supermarket chain Lidl is calling in the Gvernment in its fight t bring a new stre t Ely.

The cmpany, which wants t put a new supermarket directly ppsite Tesc in Angel Drve, has taken its case t appeal.

Nw a planning inquiry will be held giving Lidl the chance t put its case t an inspectr appinted by the Gvernment wh will make the final decisin n its plans.

Lidl wants t build a 1,342 square metre supermarket n the site f EMG Mtrs in Angel Drve.

The prject wuld invlve demlishing the present car shwrm and building an access rad t the rear f the ne-acre site where Lidl has future plans fr new tw bedrm hmes.

The cmpany had been lking fr a site in the city since 1994 and claimed its plan wuld bring up t 40 new jbs.

But East Cambridgeshire District Cuncil planners rejected the scheme fearing that it wuld prmte ut f twn shpping and harm the "vibrancy and vitality f the city centre".

Lidl has already submitted a secnd planning applicatin fr the supermarket t the district cuncil after rganising a public meeting in the city t gauge public supprt.
