CARDS and best wishes have flooded in to the Ely Standard office for Soham fundraising phenomenon Liam Fairhurst.

Liam's father, Mark Fairhurst, has said the 12-year-old is optimistic after he was diagnosed with cancer for a second time.

Mr Fairhurst said Liam has responded well to his chemotherapy, which ended on Tuesday, and that well-wishers from across the district have helped Liam through a difficult time.

"He's been very positive which has been made easier by the all the support he's had - a big thank you to everyone," he said.

Liam has also been encouraged by messages on his website, www.justgiving. com/liamsmile, which has witnessed scores of donations to children's cancer support charity Clic Sargent, along with words of support from the public.

Liam's total has shot up by more than £2,000 since he began his treatment, bringing him ever closer to his £100,000 target for Clic Sargent.

Messages have also been left at our dedicated message board at www.ely-standard.co.uk/liam, including this one: "You are an inspiration to children and adults alike, and you have touched the hearts of many people up and down the country, so when you are feeling low and the days get harder, just remember the thousands of people that are thinking about you and wishing you well."

Liam's heroic efforts so far have included a mile-long swim, which he completed despite being unable to walk a mile, and an appearance on ITV1's Fortune: Million Pound Giveaway, which saw Liam give an emotional pitch to secure £50,000 from the panel of millionaires on the show.

INFO: All are welcome to drop cards in at the Ely Standard office at 38 Market Street, Ely. We also have a board for people to leave messages at the office and on the web at www.ely-standard.co.uk/liam
