British ski jumping legend Eddie the Eagle landed in Ely to hand out prizes at King’s Ely Junior’s annual prize giving bash.

Eddie, whose real name is Michael Edwards, was the school’s guest speaker at its end-of-year event at Ely Cathedral on Thursday July 7.

The former world number nine speed skier told hundreds of pupils, parents and teachers tales of his career, which included having a film released about his life this year.

Eddie said: “It was a pleasure to meet such a lovely group of children and an honour for me to present them with their prizes in such lovely surroundings.”

Head of King’s Ely Junior, Richard Whymark, said the school’s pupils were thrilled to have such an iconic sporting figure lend a hand at their prize giving.

“Eddie’s warmth and naturally positive disposition shone through his words, delivering an encouraging and inspirational keynote speech,” he said.

“We were fortunate that Eddie could join us to celebrate all the students’ hard work and dedication at the end of the year.”
