Downham Feoffees Primary School became the first school in East Cambridgeshire to be awarded charity Sustrans’ Bronze School Mark Award for its outstanding commitment to cycling.

At a prize ceremony on Monday, Sustrans schools officer, John Stanley, presented the award to congratulate children, parents and teachers for their efforts in increasing pupils’ cycling levels by transforming the school journey.

Levels of cycling have steadily risen at the school since first involvement with Sustrans in November 2012. In a two week competition last term called The Big Pedal, Downham Feoffees had more than 30 per cent of pupils cycling or scooting into school every day.

Sustrans works with 34 schools in the area, in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council to help children overcome the barriers preventing them cycling to school.

Mr Stanley said: “It is fantastic to see Downham Feoffees doing so much to help kids cycle confidently and safely.

“Cycling is good for students’ health, confidence and independence and it makes them better learners in the classroom too.

“We are also very grateful to Cambridgeshire County Council for supporting our valuable work by providing funding through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.’’
