A former farm worker celebrated her 102nd birthday in style.

Lillian Sadler, who is the eldest resident at Laburnum Lodge Care Home in Littleport, enjoyed a cake and buffet in the company of family and friends.

She was born in 1912 at the Gravel, in nearby Witcham, and attended Mepal School before leaving to work on the land.

She married Leslie Sadler in 1935 at Sutton Church and the couple lived at Mepal Rectory Cottage before, in 1945, their only child John was born.

When John was 18 months old, the family moved to Burnt Fen in Mildenhall after Leslie was appointed farm foreman at Friezland Farm.

When Leslie died in 1969, Lillian remained in Mildenhall for a year before moving into a new house back in Mepal, where she lived until last year.

She went to work at Chivers Jams in Histon until she retired and then worked locally as the cleaner for Mepal Village Hall in her spare time.

Laburnum Lodge’s assistant manager Katie Vanputten said: “Lillian often speaks to us about working on the land. She was brought up on a farm and is well known in Mepal.

“She stills likes to keep as much independence as possible. In her 90s she was still gardening and would go up on her garage roof. At the home she likes to sing and join in with the crafts and bingo.”
