Kathleen Mary Smith, who lived in Littleport for more than 60 years, has died at the age of 95.

Born in Southwold, Suffolk, she joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during the Second World War and worked as an aircraft mechanic at bomber bases in the Midlands and Scotland.

One of her colleagues was a Littleport girl and on demob Kath went with her back to the village where she met and married her husband, Gordon, who was working there as a motor mechanic. They went on to have two sons, Ian and David and a daughter, Rosemary.

Kath was interested in wholefoods and natural remedies, gardening and crafts, and she and Gordon enjoyed camping, touring all over Britain. In later life, Kath became a stalwart of Fenprobe, the organisation which makes audio files of news and written material for the blind and partially sighted.

As well as her children she leaves seven grandchildren. Her funeral takes place at West Suffolk Crematorium, Risby, Bury St Edmunds at 3.45 pm on Wednesday November 27.
