A KARTING event is being held this weekend to raise money for the CLIC Sargent charity and to remember Soham schoolboy Liam Fairhurst who would have celebrated his 15th birthday this weekend.

More than 20 teams will compete on Saturday in a relay race at the Red Lodge Karting Centre.

The Road Safety Team at Cambridgeshire County Council is sponsoring the racing event which is being held in memory of Liam who tragically lost his life to cancer at the age of 14. Liam, during his courageous battle, raised a phenomenal 320,000 for CLIC Sargent, a charity that specialises in support for children with cancer and their families.

Each team has had to raise a considerable sum of money for the charity to gain entry into the event, and with the team who completes the most laps, and also the team which raises the most charity money being awarded a free tour of the prestigious Formula One team factories for Maclaren and Renault. The teams are based locally but also from around the UK, such as the London Metropolitan Police Force. James Allen, a recent ITV F1 commentator, is on hand to PA the event.

Road Safety publicity officer for Cambridgeshire County Council, Phil Rennie, said "We are so grateful to Liam's family for enabling us to sponsor the event. A truly remarkable young man whose achievements cannot be overstated, and it is an honour for road safety to be involved in such a fantastic cause.

"With the council covering the costs of the event, such as the fuel for the karts and the safety staff time, every penny raised will go to CLIC Sargent and the families and children they help, it should be a significant sum.

"There are also links to road safety. We will also be able to give out our road safety message to hundreds of people on the day.
