Sutton villagers faced a nerve-wracking visit from judges with the difficult task of picking the "best of the best" in the Calor Village of the Year competition on Tuesday.
They were pitched against Holywell-cum-Needingworth in the one-off event to mark the 10th anniversary of the competition.
Sutton was invited to take part in the contest following its success in the Village of the Year competition in recent years and had already submitted a written entry.
If successful, it will compete against 34 other villages, all of which are past region winners from the contest's nine year history in England and Wales or past winners from the Scottish Community of the Year competition.
The villages are being assessed on six criteria - community life, business, young people, older people, the environment and information communication technology.
The results of the competition will be announced at a London awards ceremony on September 19 and the overall winner will receive total prize money of £21,000.
