More than 50 jobs are up for grabs across Ely and surrounding areas in shops and pubs.

In Ely, up to 10 jobs are available at The Lamb Hotel and Poets House for bar staff, front of house and catering.

The Works in High Street are looking for sales assistants for the festive period, with more information available in store.

Volunteers are also being recruited for the new EACH charity shop in Ely High Street.

The shop opened at the start of the month with donations of popstar Ed Sheeran’s clothes raising £1,500 in an hour.

Software company iForce are recruiting in Sutton with interviews being held via RecruitMint Agency.

In Littleport Regard Group and Good People also have vacancies available.

It comes as it was announced earlier this week that youth unemployment has halved since 2010, according to employment figures from the Official for National Statistics.

The proportion of young people who are unemployed is at a new record low, as more than 120,000 more young people have a job than in 2010.

Universal Credit was also rolled out across Cambridge on Wednesday (October 17) as bosses hailed a “successful transition” in Ely and Wisbech of the scheme last month.

Universal Credit replaces six benefits with one monthly payment and is already being claimed by single jobseekers.

It also helps those who are in work to increase their hours and earnings.

Stephen Lankester, the district operational leader Jobcentre Plus, said: “Plenty of jobs on offer and we are seeing the need for more people to look at transferable skills in the work place.

“Both Ely and Wisbech had a very successful transition to UC and are enjoying the new way of delivering our service which Universal Credit provides.”

More than 3.3 million more people have entered work since 2010, meaning an average of 1,000 more people in work every day.

Esther McVey, work and pensions secretary, said: “Nationally figures show youth unemployment has fallen by 50 percent since 2010, down to a new record low, showing our welfare reforms are working and giving young people a better future.”

North East Cambs MP Steve Barclay, posted on his Facebook page that those on Universal Credit could also start saving under the government’s Help to Save scheme.

“If you work and receive Working Tax Credit or Universal Credit you can use the Government’s Help to Save scheme, a safe and secure way to get government support to start saving,” said Mr Barclay.

“If you are eligible, you can get: 50p bonus for every £1 saved over four years, bonuses at the end of the second and fourth years, backed by the government so all savings in the scheme are secure.”

However, resident, David Graham commented: “Laudable idea but people on Working Tax Credit or Universal Credit do not have even a spare penny at the end of the month.”
