It was disappointment for Ely’s Goldie Sayers at the Commonwealth Games last night as she finished outside the medals in the women’s javelin finals.

In front of a large partisan crowd at Scotland’s Hampden Park, Sayers, 32, produced her best throw in the sixth round, sending the javelin out to 57.68m.

But it wasn’t nearly enough to trouble the front runners on the night as the gold medal went to Australian Kim Mickle, who recorded a winning distance of 65.96m – a games record.

The silver medal went to South African Sunette Viljoen, who threw 63.19m, while the bronze went to Australian Kelsey-Lee Roberts, who managed 62.95m.

Sayers failed to recapture the promising form she has shown to claim an 11th straight British javelin title back in June – where she threw 62.75m.
