From the Royal Albert Hall to Ely Cathedral – that is the path taken by a group of young singers from Ely as they prepare for their second performance in six months of one of the most popular choral classics of all time.

Last year Ely Youth Choir joined hundreds of other young vocalists from all over the country at the famous London venue for a memorable concert featuring Handel’s Messiah.

And on Saturday April 8 they unite with their parent choir, Ely Choral Society, to sing the same work, this time at the Ely Cathedral.

For the choral society’s senior members there has been a gap of exactly 11 years since they last performed Messiah in the cathedral.

This time they will be joined by four promising young professional soloists, soprano Elizabeth Rauch, mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, tenor Oliver Martin-Smith and bass William Gaunt.

Accompanying them is the Ely Festival Orchestra, led by Helen Medlock, and Edmund Aldhouse, the cathedral’s Assistant Organist. The conductor is Andrew Parnell.

Tickets, priced from £8 to £25 (£5 for under-18s) are available from Ely Cathedral Box Office (01353 660349), at tickets.elycathedral.org and on the door.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.
