The Isle Singers, formerly known as the Sutton Warblers celebrated their 40-year anniversary on Saturday at Ely Golf Club.
This women’s choir was started by Rosemary Westwell and Sue Read in Sutton 40 years ago and has continued to meet and sing regularly on a weekly basis.
It has over a hundred songs in its repertoire and the members enjoy singing unaccompanied music from the ‘60s, songs from the shows, and by the Beatles as well as items by more traditional composers such as Mozart and Schubert.
When they first started, they appeared in the press because a large majority of the members were expecting babies and the health visitor was even a member as well.
The members are now mostly grandmothers and one is a great grandmother. The choir has sung on live TV as part of a harvest service, it has appeared in Trinity College and the St Ivo Centre and has been a surprise ‘present’ for a birthday party.
The group will be singing at Ely Station early in December and they plan to sing carols at various homes in the district.
