An investigation has been launched following a cash machine robbery in Huntingdon which is believed to have taken place in the early hours of this morning (Thursday).

Cambridgeshire police are at the scene on Mayfield Road in Huntingdon after the cash machine was removed.

Residents reported hearing an explosion and the police were called at around 12:40am.

A Spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said: “We were called at around 12.40am today (3 January) to reports of an ATM robbery in Mayfield Road, close to California Road, Huntingdon.

“Residents reported hearing an explosion. The machine was removed, before it was taken away by three men in a black Audi.

“Officers remain at the scene and investigation is on-going.

Councillor Patrick Kadewere, who represents Huntingdon North Ward has said that he is working with the police to find those responsible.

He said: “I am aware of an incident at around 12:40am whereby police were called to Mayfield Road, Huntingdon to reports of an ATM robbery.

“I strongly condemn this senseless crime which no doubt has worried and concerned those within the local area.

“As the local councillor for Huntingdon North Ward I would like to reassure local residents that everything is being done to bring those responsible to justice and to reassure my constituents their safety and well being is of utmost importance to us.

“I encourage anyone who witnessed this incident or may have seen anything suspicious in the last few days, or who has any information about this incident to contact the police and assist with this ongoing investigation.

“When future information is available an update will be given to local residents.”

Residence took to social media saying that the explosion ‘shook the ground’.

One person said: “Laura de Stefano We heard the bang in MLK Close but had no idea what it was or where it came from. It was pretty loud here, shook the ground a bit.”
