PET owners were given a sneak peek into the fire service’s world of animal rescue at an open day in Ely.

A team of animal rescue specialists from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service ran large animal rescue demonstrations and answered questions from the public at the Isle Veterinary Group’s open day on Sunday.

Firefighters took along the service’s prop horse to explain different techniques used to rescue animals that get stuck in the county’s rivers, ditches and dykes. They also spoke to animal owners about the dos and don’ts of how to act should firefighters be rescuing your animal.

Station commander Russell Metcalfe, one of CFRS’s animal rescue specialists, said: “The sunshine brought the crowds out to what was a great community day at Isle Veterinary Group. The animal rescue team really enjoyed meeting animal owners who we think found our demos informative and interesting.”
