THE Inner Wheel Club of Ely held its 58th annual charter dinner at Needham's Restaurant in Witchford on Thursday evening. President Jenny Axford welcomed members and their guests, which included the district 8 chairman Nancy Briggs, from Dereham. Also in attendance was the president of the Ely Rotary Club Mike Axford and president of the Ely Hereward Rotary Club, Philip Eden and his wife Sue. The guest speaker for the evening was James Paice MP who was with his wife Ava.
Past president Enid Bedford acted as master of ceremonies and introduced the proceedings in verse, which was appreciated by the speakers. Grace was said by past district chairman Jill Sallis. For the candle-lighting ceremony, the candle for the past was lit by past president Pat Sneesby, for the present by president Jenny Axford, for the future by Pauline Bowerman and for overseas by Ethel Smith, club overseas officer.
Greetings were brought from the district by Nancy Briggs and from the Ely Hereward Rotary Club by Rotarian Philip Eden. President Mike Axford proposed the toast to the Inner Wheel Club to which Jenny Axford responded.
James Paice thanked Enid for the introduction in verse, as this was the first time he had been introduced in this manner and also for teaching him how to ride a horse. He said that he had been the MP for South East Cambridgeshire for the past 20 years, and had spent the past 10 years on the opposition bench, as Shadow Minister for Agriculture. He talked of all the places he had been so far that week, but on Fridays and Saturdays his time is spent on constituency matters. He was thanked by vice-president Jackie Wade for fitting the club into his busy schedule and it had been our privilege to meet him. Jackie also thanked Jenny on behalf of the members for the beautifully knitted scarves she had given them.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, March 28, at 7.30pm at the Old Dispensary when the speaker will be Mrs Simmonds.
