750 pints of beer and 250 pints of cider were downed by more than 300 people this weekend as St Andrew’s Church, Sutton, held its third winter beer festival - raising £1,500 for church funds in the process.
Throughout Friday and Saturday, dozens of varieties of local beverages were enjoyed and homemade food was on sale, whilst live music entertainment came from Meadow Lane, Elements Acoustic Duo and Morris dancing group Sutton Masque.
Church council member and organiser Bruce King said: “The beer fest is a good way of getting people into the church building who would not normally be found there.
“We had lots of people on both days and raised in excess of £1,500,” he added.
“A few people had doubts at first, but churches have been doing things like this for centuries, and there’s a long tradition of monks brewing beers and other drinks.”
Councillor King added that the beer fests are among the better fund-raising activities for the church, with a summer festival typically raising £2,000 and a winter event around £1,000.
The church’s summer festival will be held from July 28 to 30.
