HUNDREDS of people enjoyed the traditional St George's Day Fair in Ely on Sunday, despite the best efforts of the English weather to put a dampener on proceedings.

The celebration, at St Mary's Green, Ely, was officially opened by city councillor Richard Hobbs, before the children of Witchford's Rackham Primary School began a Maypole dance.

There was a regional theme to the event, with East Anglian molly dancers, a celebration of the Littleport riots and local food and drink provided by Chippenham's La Hogue Farm Shop and Delicatessen and The Fenland Brewery, of Little Downham.

Children could try their hands at traditional games and watch a puppet show that told the story of St George and the dragon with a distinctly modern twist.

Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Guides and Brownies from across the district also marked St George's Day with a parade.

More than 20 local groups formed the parade, which made its way from an assembly point in Market Place, through Market Place and around Palace Green before a service at the cathedral.
