For the first time in 11 years, a home boat won Ely Sailing Club's annual Enterprise Meeting.

Father and daughter team John and Charlotte Willis won two of three races to secure victory. Andy Ship and Georgina Parkin, of Hunts Sailing Club, won the morning race and finished second overall.

Despite the forecast of torrential rain there was a good turnout with competitors from as far afield as Beccles and Melton Mowbray. Conditions were good with consistent wind throughout the day.

- MATTHEW Friary was victorious in Ely Sailing Club's annual Open Laser Meeting, on Sunday, and after claiming two wins, he didn't even have to sail the final race.

There were five home helms and six visitors competing in three races. In the first race, Ely's Sue Sallis finished fifth, one place ahead of her sister, Alayne Seymour.

But Alayne had the edge in the next two races, and finished second in the final race.

Friary, from Waveney and Oulton Broad Yacht Club, and Alan Bishop, from Fishers Green Sailing Club, battled for supremacy in the first two races, but Friary's class shone through to win both and the title.

With the title secure, Friary sat out the final race, leaving Bishop to take the line honours, with Ely fleet captain Alayne Seymour just behind.

Rear Commodore Gary Ungless presented the prizes to: 1 Matthew Friary (two points), 2 Alan Bishop (three points), 3 Graham Smith (six points).

Ed Harrison from Waldringfield SC was fourth with seven points but was awarded the swimming prize. Alayne Seymour was fifth with eight points and won the first lady helm prize.

On the eve of his 18th birthday, Ely's John Cant was eighth overall with 13 points and won the prize for the best-placed Laser Radial Helm.
